Dear Colleagues,

The health economy in the North West of England is endeavouring to raise awareness about climate change, embrace sustainable development and reduce its ecological footprint. Stakeholders in the North West of England, as in a range of other European regions, are exploring opportunities for greener procurement of health services, for building health infrastructure using the principles of sustainable development, for increasing the use of energy conservation measures and renewable energies and looking at the health and economic gains that such organisational change can bring for the sector and to the North West of England region.

The North West of England Regional Brussels Office (NWHBO) is currently undertaking a research project examining the linkages between Health, the Economy and the Environment. The project began in January 2007 and is set to continue for nine months, ending in September 2007.

The principle aims of the project are to:

  • Map the European Policy Context for Health and the Economy, Climate Change and the Environment
  • Collate evidence of emerging practises regarding the contribution of the health sector to sustainable development in the North West, the UK and Europe in order to facilitate exchange of best practice, and identify potential international partners for the North West.
  • Raise awareness and engagement levels within the North West health sector of Good Corporate Citizenship and Sustainable Development to aid the establishment of key strategic actions and principles at an NHS Green Summit in 2007.
  • Ensure the research informs the consultations and discussions at the European level including the EU Green Public Procurement Communication in 2007.

In order to achieve these objectives it will be necessary to address policy and governance at local, regional, national and European level and to work with as many stakeholders as possible. We hope that politicians, policy makers, specialists and other relevant stakeholders will to contribute to this work.

This is a very inclusive project which hopes to facilitate the NHS in its efforts to tackle the global problem of climate change and avoid contributing to tomorrow's ill health. It also aims to explore linkages and create lasting partnerships at the European and international levels on this issue.

If you have any further questions about this research project or the North West Health Brussels Office, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Tina Blain
